West Midlands Railway, owned by Abellio, operates train services throughout the heart of England from London to Birmingham, managing 150 stations, operating 1,300 services per day and 70 million passenger journeys a year.

The company has been exploring ways to reduce its energy, maintenance costs, and carbon footprint, while also improving the customer environment. One clear opportunity was to replace the high-pressure sodium, metal halide and fluorescent luminaires previously in place at Redditch station with more efficient alternatives.

Approaching a Carbon Trust Accredited Supplier – Thorlux Lighting – for support, it was recommended that West Midlands Railway install high efficiency LED luminaires combined with energy saving controls to maximise potential savings, whilst providing full flexibility of lighting control.

West Midlands Railway selected high performance LED luminaires and controls, that were compliant with the UK government’s Energy Technology List. This gave the company confidence that it was purchasing some of the most energy efficient options available in the market. And as a result, West Midlands Railway was able to benefit from accelerated tax relief through claiming an Enhanced Capital Allowance.

Installed in 2017, the new LED luminaires have resulted in a 76% energy reduction on lighting at Redditch station, saving around £1,900 a year. In addition, the previous luminaires required around £5,000 worth of maintenance each year, but the high efficiency luminaires have reduced maintenance costs by 64%, saving an additional £3,000 annually. These financial savings are on top of the benefits of claiming Enhanced Capital Allowances.

We are always looking to improve our stations for our customers. We are committed to reducing our impact on the environment and improving the sustainability of our railways. The installation of highly efficient LED luminaires combined with energy saving controls has allowed us to reduce annual energy consumption, helping us to manage our resources more efficiently and improve the positive impacts of the organisation
