Eurovent Certified rooftop heat pumps now easier to list on the ETL

Rooftop heat pump manufacturers can now use their Eurovent Certification test reports to apply for the ETL

Product specification plays a critical role in the success of any project. Eurovent Certification and the ETL have strengthened their collaboration to streamline the listing and selection of rooftop heat pump units in the UK, enabling manufacturers and specifiers to easily identify, compare and select high-performing rooftop heat pump units. Our ongoing collaboration has taken a major step forward by aligning testing standards and efficiency parameters for rooftop heat pump units. This not only streamlines the ETL listing process for manufacturers but also simplifies product selection for specifiers.

The background

Since early 2024, the ETL and Eurovent Certification have been working on a programme to align testing standards and efficiency parameters so that Eurovent test reports can be used to apply for the ETL, provided products meet strict energy performance criteria.

The Energy Technology List features around 8,000 independently verified and accredited energy efficient products across 65 sub-technology groups, backed by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). The scheme is free, helping UK businesses, and the public sector make greener energy choices by selecting the most energy efficient products.

Eurovent Certification is a third-party certification body that assesses the performance of HVAC and refrigeration products. Trusted worldwide, Eurovent Certification programmes independently verify product performance data, via a stringent and impartial certification process, which includes laboratory testing, factory audits, software checks, and data consistency checks.

Product alignment

Rooftop heat pump units deliver reliable heating, cooling and ventilation in a single package, improving indoor air quality with high-efficiency filters. Mounted externally on rooftops, these all-in-one units can provide ventilation, cooling and/or heating directly to the indoor space. Beyond temperature control, rooftop units can improve indoor air quality with high-efficiency filters that capture harmful particles. Designed for spaces where air can be recirculated safely, many modern rooftop units also go a step further, offering advanced features like humidity regulation and free cooling, enhancing comfort and efficiency.

The ETL provides detailed product information, with all listed products ranking among the top 25% most energy efficient in their class. Heat pumps are consistently one of the most searched-for categories on the ETL, with listed units from brands such as Ideal Boilers, Baxi and Hisa. Reflecting wider market trends, Heat Pump Association data shows a 63% rise in heat pump sales across the UK in 2024.

Rooftop units join an expanding list of Eurovent Certification-aligned sub-technologies, including:

Eurovent certified manufacturers can use their existing test reports to apply for the ETL, reducing time, costs and complexity.

Benefits for manufacturers

Aligning Eurovent certified rooftop units with ETL criteria streamlines the listing process while maintaining trusted third-party performance standards. With the ETL backed by the UK Government, manufacturers gain easier access to public sector buyers and sustainability-focused businesses.

Benefits for decision makers

ETL listed products holding Eurovent Certification meet high standards of efficiency and performance.  ETL certification provides independent verification of a product’s energy efficiency, enabling purchasers to translate sustainability initiatives into measurable financial benefits.

Additionally, ETL certification establishes a credible and auditable standard for responsible procurement practices, aligned with corporate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives. Organisations can use ETL certification to evidence responsible purchasing choices and demonstrate progress towards decarbonisation targets, particularly relevant to financial stakeholders and sustainability executives.
