2024 Round-up: new technologies, more products and an improved user experience
A year of growth and innovation
As we wrap up a record year for the ETL, we're excited to highlight the strides we've made in expanding our offerings, improving accessibility, and fostering innovation across the energy efficient technology sector. From launching a revamped website, adding a new technology, the inclusion of new products from known and first-time listers, and highlighting insightful case studies, this round-up captures the most significant updates of 2024.
Here's a look back at what made this year remarkable for the ETL.
An updated website
Launched in January, the new design focuses on making it easier for users to find what they need, whether they’re searching for information about energy efficient technologies or guidance on product applications. Highlights include the clearer search functionality, use of carousels and accordions, and its efficient design.
These improvements, driven by user input, are part of our ongoing commitment to make the ETL as accessible and informative as possible for businesses, manufacturers, and all stakeholders. New interactive elements, a refined search tool, and direct links to key documents were all part of this overhaul, making the site more intuitive for both seasoned users and newcomers. New products on the ETL and record number of applications
This year saw the addition of not only new products, but a new technology family to the ETL. The introduction of energy efficient non-domestic Showers marks a significant expansion, providing more options for businesses aiming to reduce water and energy consumption. This addition was a result of direct feedback from manufacturers through the New Technology Proposal process (NTP). This resulted in a scoping study held in consultation with a number of relevant stakeholders, including the Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA). Read more about the inclusion of Showers on the ETL here, and more about NTPs here.
Showers join a diverse list of technology categories, emphasising the ETL’s commitment to supporting a broad range of technologies to promote energy efficiency. You can browse all of them here.
2024 has been a landmark year for new product applications to the ETL. With 60 applications submitted so far, we have seen manufacturers from diverse sectors seeking ETL listing. Among those were ABB Ltd, Adande Refrigeration, Building Products Distributor, Electrolux Professional, Hisa Engineering Ltd, Hobart, Husky Refrigerators (UK)Ltd., Liebherr, MCS NV, MKN Maschinenfabrik Kurt Neubauer GmbH&Co., Power Quality Expert Ltd., Recoup Energy Solutions Ltd., Stark ID, UNOX UK LTD, Victor Manufacturing Limited, Ziehl Abegg UK Ltd.
Listed products include Air to Water Heat Pumps, Automatic Monitoring and Targeting Sub-metering Systems, Combination Steam Ovens, Commercial Fans, Hood-Type Dishwashers, Portable Energy Monitoring Equipment, Professional Refrigerated Storage Cabinets, Refrigerated Display Cabinets, Uninterruptible Power Supplies and Wastewater Heat Recovery Systems.
We expect this momentum to continue, as more manufacturers see the benefits of an ETL listing, not only in terms of energy savings but also as a mark of credibility and compliance with government policies. Apply now to list your products on the ETL.
New guides, articles and case studies
This year, we launched our very own ETL YouTube channel, featuring how-to guides and coverage of events attended by the ETL, including expert interviews providing industry insights. The guides make it easier for manufacturers and businesses to navigate ETL requirements and for purchasers to find products. Explore our YouTube channel and watch the videos here. In addition to video content, we’ve developed a series of informative articles with topics ranging from the role of the ETL in transforming the lighting industry to detailed explorations of specific technologies. Browse our articles here.
Our new case studies illustrate how ETL-listed products are making a tangible difference. A standout is London’s Punch and Judy Pub, which benefited from energy efficient solutions like Rhino’s refrigeration units, helping to maintain the ideal temperature for beverages while reducing energy costs. Read the full case study.
These success stories highlight the real-world applications of ETL technologies. If you would like to contribute a case study, please email media@etl.energysecurity.gov.uk with the information you would like featured.
2024 Research Programme
As part of our 2024 initiatives, we also announced a comprehensive Research Programme. The primary goal of the Research Programme is to benchmark the market to ensure that the ETL criteria continue to cover the top 25% of the market. This review process includes evaluating existing sub-technologies and conducting scoping studies based on New Technology Proposals (NTPs).
Keeping up with evolving measurement standards ensures the process for applicants remains simple, streamlined, and accessible. Additionally, the Research Programme estimates energy and cost savings for each sub-technology, helping users to make informed decisions.
The Research Programme informs future ETL updates and technology additions, ensuring they remain current and relevant. Get details on our 2024 Research Programme here.
The ETL embraces BIM integration for enhanced energy efficiency
BIM is advancing the construction industry by providing a digital description of built assets throughout its lifecycle. At its core, BIM allows for better planning, design, construction, and management by integrating data into a unified model. The ETL recognises the importance of BIM in promoting energy efficient technologies, as it enables architects, engineers, and facility managers to make more informed decisions regarding energy consumption and sustainability from the earliest stages of a project. Find out more about BIM.
Manufacturers will soon be able to upload BIM objects and technical specifications (product data sheets) to their product pages on the ETL. This follows consultation with a number of stakeholders which identified the opportunities of integrating BIM objects into the ETL.
Collecting and publishing product information used in the digital description of built assets (i.e., BIM), ensures that the ETL continues to play an important role in standardisation efforts, streamlining the specification process for energy efficient equipment.
By adhering to industry standards and utilising digitalisation, the ETL helps address the requirements of building designers and stakeholders, promoting the adoption of energy efficient technologies.
