Now live: New additions to the Energy Technology List
Following on from our earlier update, new technology groups, sub-technologies and updates to 13 other sets of technology criteria are now live on the ETL.
Amid the news of rocketing energy costs, the need for energy efficient equipment has grown. We want to help procurers lower their running costs, while helping manufacturers obtain the independent energy performance verification they need for their products.

Introducing Professional Foodservice Equipment
The introduction of PFSE to the ETL is a big step for the sector - it’s the first energy efficiency product performance benchmark the UK foodservice industry has seen.
Aside from refrigerated cabinets, the foodservice industry has been mostly unregulated to date, with no Minimum Ecodesign Performance Standards (MEPS) and no mandatory labelling. With PFSE now available on the ETL, the positive implications this technology could have for Net Zero goals is huge, especially when considering the size of the sector.
Andy Threlfall MInstR, Technical and Policy Director at the Foodservice Equipment Association offered his thoughts on the launch:
“The ETL scheme promotes the highest efficiency units, which can benefit all in helping to reduce energy consumption and help to reduce the carbon footprint of food service operators. The ETL scheme can assist in achieving the FEA’s 5-point plan to satisfy the circular economy principles, helping Manufacturers, Design consultants, Dealers/Resellers, Operators and Recyclers.”
“The new additions of Commercial under counter/pass through dishwashers, convection ovens and combi ovens to the ETL scheme provides additional assurance that verified high efficiency units are being specified or purchased, and can help in the application for certain efficiency schemes like BREEAM.”

New Commercial Fans sub-technology
We’ve launched a new sub-technology in Commercial Fans. This launch comes after extensive collaboration with manufacturers and the Fan Manufacturers Association over an 18-month period. It’s a much-needed sub-technology, with applications for a range of sectors, such as retail, hospitality and office buildings.
It’s a great opportunity for manufacturers to gain independent verification of their equipment performance, and for end-users to easily identify the best products on the market.

BEMS and AM&T join the ETL
New sub-technologies Building Energy Management Systems and Automatic Monitoring & Targeting Sub-Metering Systems are now listed on the ETL. Both of which play a key role in helping organisations make big savings on their energy bills, as they provide measurements on system energy consumption.
This equipment is essential in helping organisations make accurate plans to achieve Net Zero goals, as with any plan or decarbonisation initiative, measuring consumption is a vital first step - goals can’t be reached without measuring progress.

Efficient White Lighting Units updated on the ETL
Our Efficient White Lighting Units sub-technology is now listed on the ETL. This is big news for the lighting industry. As an essential and incredibly widespread tech, the potential for saving both money and energy in this area is huge.
Internal lighting is the highest end-use of electrical energy in the non-domestic sector*, so the updating of this sub-technology comes after much demand from purchasers. The ETL also identified a need to provide clarification on which products are approved.
